CLOSE OUT OF APPS

Just hitting your home button doesn't close an app, it just takes you back to your homescreen. Your app is still running in the background using battery power and taking up memory. Double-tapping your home button will show you all of the apps that are running in the background. Swipe up on the app window to close the app. Closing an app and reopening it is the first step in troubleshooting. Be sure to do close apps regularly to save battery. 

RESTART YOUR DEVICE

When's the last time you powered your iPad off? Not just put it to sleep, but shut it down all the way? Chances are it's been days or even weeks. Going in and out of apps over time can overload your IPad if you don't close your apps and occasionally shut it down or restart it. To power you iPad down, hold down the power button at the top right corner of your device until the "Slide to Power Off" prompt shows up. Slide to the right and turn it off. (Be sure to close out of all open apps first, or when you turn it back on they'll all still be running in the background.) At night when you charge your iPad, consider turning it off to give yourself a fresh start in the morning.

CHECK FOR UPDATES

If your apps start to act "glitchy" (shutting down, jumping around, acting strange) check to make sure your iPad is up-to-date with the latest software. There are two type of updates to run:

  1. iOS (System) Updates – These show up as a little red number next to your Settings app. These updates improve the day-to-day operation of your iPad as Apple makes changes. Open Settings and choose General on the left. Next, choose Software Update on the right. It will tell you if your software is up-to-date or if there is an update to be run. Run iOS updates at night, during lunch, or when you won't be needing your iPad for a while. These updates can sometimes take 15-30 minutes depending on how many changes are being made.
  2. App Updates – If your system software (iOS) is up-to-date, chances are there's an update for your apps. Normally you'd see this in the App Store but since we don't use the App Store on your school device we need to update apps differently. Open Self Service, click on any app and tap the "Reinstall" button to download the newest version of an app. Sometimes Self Service will even show "Update" next to an app to let you know there's a new version out there. 

 

REINSTALL APPS

Reinstalling an app even if there isn't an update can sometimes make all the difference if an app is acting up. You don't want to delete an app like Notability, iMovie, or Book Creator that contains projects and notes you've created or you risk losing your work. By going into Self Service and choosing "Reinstall," you will get an updated version of the app and keep all of the data and content associated with the app. If it's an app that you log into with an account (like Schoology, MyHomework, or Educreations) go ahead and delete it first and then reinstall it. When you open up the new app all you need to do is log back in to restore your data.

locked out or frozen?

Sometimes your iPad will lockup or freeze. It seems like nothing works, even your home button. If you've tried the steps above and it's still stuck, try doing what's called a "Hard Reset" of your device. Hold down the power button and the home button at the same time. Wait until the iPad shuts down and then the Apple comes back up before letting go of both buttons. Once the iPad powers back up most of the time your iPad is back to normal and ready to be used!

FORGOT MY PASSCODE

YIKES! You use this passcode every day to unlock your device, but sometimes it just doesn't seem to work right. If you type your passcode in wrong once or twice, it's not a big deal. But if you keep typing your passcode in incorrectly the IPad will lock you out. The first lockout is only for 15 minutes, but that time will keep increasing with each incorrect entry. STOP trying and wait until you get back to school or email your teacher. Your teacher or building tech assistant can remove the passcode from your device and help you reset it safely. If you keep typing in the incorrect passcode it will eventually disable your iPad and then there's nothing we can do to help: The iPad will need to be erased completely and there's a good chance you will lose any work that isn't backed up.

Keep your iPad in a safe, secure place at home so that younger siblings and visiting relatives don't lock you out trying to figure out your passcode. Keep the passcode secure! Only you, your parent(s) and your teacher should know that passcode! Don't change it without their permission and when they allow you to make a change, make sure they all know the new passcode.
